The 4th screening... of the Inaugural UK Malaysian Film Festival

SNOW IN MIDSUMMER @snow.in.midsummer

UK Premiere

Snow in Midsummer is a 2023 historical drama film directed by Chong Keat Aun. A Malaysian, Singaporean and Taiwanese co-production, the film has been selected for the Giornate degli Autori International Competition, a parallel section of the Venice International Film Festival, where it had its global premiere.

Snow in Midsummer leads the race for this year’s Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan with nine nominations, including best narrative feature, best director and best supporting actress.

The film was named Best Film (Chinese Language) in the Young Cinema Competition at the 48th Hong Kong International Film Festival.

The historical trauma of Malaysia's '513' incident permeates the present in a series of haunting tableaux that compose this operatic drama.

Date & Time: Friday 4 October 5:00 PM

Venue: BLOC @ ArtsOne Building, Queen Mary University of London, 1 Westfield Way, London E1 4PD

Curators Notes:

If it suddenly snows in midsummer, there must be grave injustice somewhere - so says the ancient Chinese play Dou E Yuan. Injustice, indeed, unfolded in Malaysia on 13 May 1969: significant sectarian violence erupted after the ruling coalition’s subpar performance in the General Election, leading to the deaths and disappearances of many Malaysian Chinese.
Using Dou E Yuan as a metaphor for this tragedy in Malaysian history, this film revolves around two women whose lives have forever been changed by the 13 May incident. The director, Chong Keat Aun, based this remarkable work on his interview with 14 family members of the victims of the 13 May incident, whom he got to know from his visits to a mass grave that buried the unfortunate souls who perished that night.
Food, in this film, becomes a bridge connecting the living and the dead, reminding us of the injustice over 50 years ago.  Co-Lead Curator Chris Lau @chrislks
